After all the anxiety we experienced last night and this morning, the septostomy was called off mid procedure.
There were three feasible access points for the catheter - the groin, neck or through the liver. Dr Duke agreed that if the liver became necessary it would be postponed until a radiographer could be available to assist the passage of the catheter. Unfortunately, despite an attempt to go through the groin, the veins are already too scarred from all the other lines that have been in and it proved impossible for the procedure to continue.
Feeling relieved in some ways - We have not lost Theo - but also incredibly dismayed and frustrated. What an anti-climax - we are emotionally drained.
The risks of hepatic entry are greater but it also means that there is ONLY that way of performing this procedure, which itself is a last measure to keep Theo with us.
The next catheter procedures are scheduled for Friday, so we are hopeful he is able to have the surgery then.
