Cardiac Clinic July 30th 2009

Believe it or not but it is exactly one year, to the day, that Theo was admitted as an emergency to the PICU at Glenfield. I took a short visit back into the unit and was overwhelmed by unpleasant memories..yet also very happy moments.

Today happened to be his 3 monthly review at the clinic with his saviour Dr Duke. I took great pleasure in thanking Dr Duke for our year with Theo - it is thanks to his (and the other doctors') amazing expertise and innovative treatment that we still have our littlest boy. So despite the horrible experiences of the last 12 months, we are grateful for so many things.

Dr Duke has agreed that Theo is well enough to have an operation for a gastrostomy; this will mean creating a portal directly into his stomach for us to give feeds and medicine. It will allow us to feed him without the uncomfortable NG tube up his nose and perhaps will allow him to develop some eating skills.
Secondly, we are no longer anxious to hear from Great Ormond Street hospital; the urgency is reducing and although this means yet more shifting sand beneath our feet as we struggle to comprehend life ahead, it can only be a good thing. An amazing, awesome thing. Dr Duke took full credit - said it was his stent that had done it.

We are also incredibly grateful to all the kind and patient people who have entered our lives to support our family, while we have been insulated by Theo's illness.

So the future of Theo's treatment now looks like this; to reduce, bit by bit, the ventilatory support and the medicines until he reaches a minimum. There is no way of knowing how far he will get or how long it will take.

Here's to the future!!
