Tracheostomy decannulation planned

Have been to respiratory clinic this morning and Dr Pandya very nonchalantly agreed that the tracheostomy can be reversed....NEXT WEEK!!
it was exactly the news we were expecting..well hoping for...and I am so pleased that it came.

Dr P has been amazingly well disciplined in the face of my pushy demands that it happened faster. Deep down I knew he was right and that it pays to be patient in such things but you know, he never had to live with it and lug all the equipment round and do the daily tape change, order the stuff and collect it monthly, all the constant (sometimes disgusting) suctioning...so he could be patient!!

If anyone is interested how it works, Theo will be admitted for a couple of days mon - wed because it is necessary to monitor him and how he reacts to not having it. He will have to work a bit harder to breathe as the upper airways provide resistance against the flow that the tracheostomy bypassed. If there are any probs they will put it back in and we may need to wait sometime longer. But I doubt there will be a prob in that sense. The other thing that might happen is that the stoma (hole) doesn't close by itself and minor op to close it surgically would be necessary. Again, have doubts it will happen.
We are just so delighted I can't help feel positive!! Visitors in hospital will be welcome because we will be bored - as he's not in for illness, and it's a procedure, he will be allowed to play etc. Don't know what the visiting hours are these days though. Look for news on facebook too.

Next update next week!
