Phew! Panic reduced! Been in to see him at last and he looked really very fed up with me. As well as a good pink colour. I almost got the impression he was quite disatisfied with the fact I had not been in - can hardly expect him to understand though.
Theo does have the RSV bronchiolitis virus BUT everything is under control. It is a sizeable step backwards as his ventilation remains increased etc (but we always knew this could be the case).
Just so the confusion may be put to rest, bronchitis and bronchiolitis are different illnesses.
As his feeds had been stopped for many hours, he was quite naturally cranky and unusually hungry - it isnt something he experiences often with a drip feed straight into his gut. I went to wash his mouth with a swab and he licked ravenously at it. I went in with a sponge to wipe the inside of his mouth (standard procedure) and he sucked furiously at it. I fed him 4 sponges worth (theyre the size of little chef lollies) of sterile water before running out. Between each sponge he went purple in the face and looked like a child in agony (waaaaaah) so i resorted rapidly to a finger and he went crazy for it. After 10 minutes of standing at an uncomfortable angle I thought he may just take the dummy in spite of it usually making him gag and retch. Indeed he did and fell asleep with it twitching. The speech and language therapy team will be delighted that there are occasions when Theo will accept things in his mouth.
Perhaps I shouldnt be so pleased to have discovered this when technically I should be focussing on his current infection but thats the way it is. Everything seems a little distorted these days.
For our readership - I know some of you may feel uncomfortable asking about Theo or discussing his condition, or admitting your lack of knowledge. It isn't worth worrying over, honestly. We won't judge you. Either google it or ask us outright because he's our darling baby boy and part of the family. We do try to keep the blog full of relevant information so that you are up to speed.
We are meeting our social worker tomorrow. We have lots of discussing to do.
